Ava J.
“Ava is coming up on 2 years since diagnosis. It was over thanksgiving weekend that she got the bug that was going around the family, only she got hit much harder. We ended up rushing her to the emergency room with her struggling to breathe. Within minutes, my husband and I heard the doctor say “386”. It was at that moment that our hearts sank. We had brought her in thinking she might have RSV or pneumonia or something. Little did we know, she would be joining her Daddy as a type 1 diabetic. He was diagnosed at 14 and had struggled throughout his teen and adult years to gain control of his blood sugars. He became a health nut and was constantly seeking out more info and trying to find the thing that would help him most. He tried out a vegan diet for a few months and during that time my mom started on a keto diet and he started researching on youtube(with the intention of proving the keto diet unhealthy 😜). That’s when he stumbled upon Dr Bernstein and spent many hours listening to his story and his method of achieving normal blood sugars. We went low carb as a family and never looked back. For the first time in his life, he was able to get good control of his blood sugars. His lab work looked great, improving drastically from a few months prior, as well, and his doctor told him to keep doing whatever he was doing. So when Ava was diagnosed, we knew what we needed to do to take care of her and help her body maintain normal, healthy blood sugar. And let me tell you, it works! We have maintained an A1C below 5.0 for over 1.5 years now. She is a strong and strong willed, smart, sweet, and funny! She understands why we do what we do.
Her Daddy died after a tragic ATV accident a year and a half ago. He was her “type one buddy”. It has been really hard on her. She never got to say goodbye to him. We miss him and life will never be the same. I am very grateful that his thirst for knowledge led him to the work of Dr. Bernstein and gave us the tools to achieve a life of health. She is 6 years old. She keeps me on my toes and sometimes drives me crazy, but she’s also my inspiration and the best cuddler and lover I know. She’s gonna do big things!”
